First Impressions
I’m a total fan of Gena Showalter’s work so I had to read Lord of the Vampires to see what crazy place she would send me next.
What Worked
An intense, complex world which drew me in and held my attention through the story. Nicolai and Jane’s story had a world wind pace filled with action and danger at every turn, which some could see as boarding on rushed I don’t.
The mystery was an enigma; would Nicolai receive his memory back? How did he lose it in the first place? How did Jane fall into everything and how things would turn out for her as well as Nicolai in the long run was not as predictable as I thought it would be. Though these questions may seem easily predictable, the way Ms. Showalter arranged things really had me in the dark about how it would turn out in the end.
The romance was sizzling. From the beginning there was a clear connection between Nicolai and Jane. I enjoyed their journey to finding love. Even though there was an instant connection between them their love wasn’t instant. They had to go through a lot of trials and tribulations to finally be together.
Could Have Been Better
I felt that the story could have been even better if I could have learned more about Jane’s personal story as well. The main focus is on Nicolai’s story and we get pieces of both of their lives that further the plot but I would have liked to get to know more about Jane so that I could have related or understood her more. I felt that is could have created a better and richer balance within the story.
Characters
Jane: She was an interesting character. Giving the situation she found herself I could understand her decisions, somewhat. She had some spunk going up against Nicolai which made things interesting.
Nicolai: Total Alpha male even in the crazy situation he found himself in, an intriguing personality. I enjoyed finding out his story.
Overall
Lord of the Vampires was a great start to the Royal House of Shadows series. It had the complex world, world wind action and sizzling romance. I didn’t know what would happen next and that kept me into the story. Though I had one issue I still found the story entertaining and look forward to the rest of the series.
